Something I've always wanted to write about, but wasn't sure how to present, is... BARGAIN SHOPPING. Sure, there are tons of shopping blogs and deal sites out there, but I rarely see any that showcase the deal hunting for fashion, etc. without coming off as "cheap chic". I am a sale and bargain hunter to the max and hope I can share some of my favorite finds without the bargainista feel. Maybe "luxury for less" instead? haha... we'll see.

Three years ago, I started this blog with the intent of creating a ton of beforeafters and growing my Etsy store. I was fresh out of Parsons, had moved back to the Midwest and was full of inspiration from my NYC days.

...but then a full-time job, relationships, a puppy (<3), and the general "I've been soooo busy" took over. Every once in a while I posted a few randoms on a separate blog (now merged with this one), but never really picked up the creativity of my initial attempt at blogging.

SO without further ado! After spending time in LA and now settled back and working in NYC again, I am re-inspired and excited to post again! Fashion, shopping, decor, daily life...everything and anything that is me. Hope you'll tune in and enjoy the ride.

diy: multi-color charm bracelet/ necklace

I recently stumbled upon the jewelry creations of Aurélie Bidermann while browsing net-a-porter. A French designer, she has pieces ranging from avant-garde to whimsical. I love the contrast of her dramatic and intricate pieces, like the lace cuff (dipped in blackened silver!) to the cutesy and fun mother-of-pearl charm bracelets.

Inspired by the simplicity of this charm bracelet, I sought to create a similar version using a few supplies I had from previous projects.

What you'll need:

multi-colored jewelry cord (mine is from Hobby Lobby)
skull charm(s)
head pins
scissors
jewelry pliers
clip board

Process:

Measure enough cord to wrap around your wrist several times. I went around five times to allow some excess for the knots and the braid. Unravel the cord to separate the three pieces. Tie a knot at the end and secure to the clip board. Start braiding!

After you have finished braiding, wrap the cord around your wrist again as many times as you want, tie a knot at the end of the cord and tie the two cord pieces together to make sure it fits. Trim off any extra cord.

To attach the charms, you will need to know how to create a head pin loop. Here's a quick tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQcyNSVcxgc.

Attach the charms onto the cord after you have made the loop and before you wrap the wire. Or you can untie the knot at the end and thread on the charms.

Space the charms out, and voila you are finished!

Result:

The best part about this bracelet... it can also function as a necklace.

I have been obsessing over these A/W '09 Alexander Wang oxfords since I saw them a couple months ago on Christine at christeric. Perfect little boot to go with shorts or skirts, but far from my perfect price at $395.

As luck would have it, I stopped by a thrift store today and stumbled upon these...

A little more cow-boyish, in barely worn condition, similar shape, and exactly my size!

Minus the garish logo zipper pull, these shoes are going to get a lot of wear.

Re-Style Fashion Show

Following up from the last post... I did it! Yesterday was the Re-Style Fashion Show and Competition at the Green With Indie Craft Event here in St.Louis. It was a lot of work in the 2 weeks before re-designing and sewing the 3 dresses I decided to enter, but it was so much fun I hope this first-time event continues on annually!

These are 3 dresses I have been meaning to fix up for a while now. From L to R Albert Nipon power dress - super 80's/ early 90's, 1960's vintage maxi dress - love the orange, and a shapeless, drab, brown plaid dress circa early 90's(?).

Taking inspiration from the Spring runways, I wanted to create pieces that would be light, feminine and great for the warmer weather. Here are the finished outfits in the show:

There were a lot of amazing pieces in the show and I was so happy to be able to display my work for the first time in a public venue offline. To my surprise, when they announced the winners, I ended up with not 1 but 2(!!!) of the awards! I received the top prize for my category-Most Eco-Fabulous Individual and a smaller prize-Most Creative Repurposing. The envelopes were filled with great stuff including gift cards to an upscale salon, a jewelry store, and tickets to the Missouri Botanical Gardens. When they were announcing the winners I was so caught up in the after-show excitement and chatting with my friends that came to watch that I'm not even sure which pieces won for what awards! At the end, all of the outfits were donated to a silent auction that benefits earthdancefarms.org. It was a really fun and eventful day and I am now relaxing the rest of the weekend, contemplating what to work on next. Stay tuned!

Me oh my has time flown. Its nearly February now and I feel like I just finished with October. Curses to my full time job that leaves me with so little free time! So many exciting things have occurred recently including a new camera for shoots (Canon Rebel XT w/ Tamron lens), a trip over Christmas to San Francisco/Berkeley where the vintage was aplenty, the discovery of a great vintage store here in St.Louis, and this very cool backdrop kit to spice up the quality of my photos.

Slowly, I'm learning how to use the DSLR and properly light the backdrop to get high quality photos. Anyone know of good tutorials I can read online? :)

Halloween fun

Back with a new post... and slightly off topic, but this was my life for the past few weeks. In September, I volunteered to make my friends' costumes for Halloween this year. We decided the Power Rangers would be a fun group theme (ignoring the dorkiness, its childhood nostalgia!) and the feat to create all of these outfits was put on me. Everything was created from scratch and custom made for each. Five weeks of fittings and many hours of sewing later, my friends and I were transformed into the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. So into it.

We had so much fun going out to the Halloween parties around town and made the finals of two of the contests we entered. A scantily clad Catwoman beat us in one of them. Go figure.

Now that the Halloween fun is sadly over, its time to get back into my hobbies that I've fallen so far behind on. Of course that means #1 a massive revamp of the store (I still have Summer 2008 up, how embarrassing.) , #2 remaking vintage (a huge pile awaits!), and #3 catching up on blog reading (over 2500 posts unread...).

Last month I received a lovely Etsy message from Dorothy aka tofunation. She had recently purchased a vintage dress online, but like many vintage pieces, the shape was not very flattering.

My response? Helllll yeah! Re-creating vintage pieces is a passion of mine, and of course designing it for others makes it about 100 x's more fun.

A few back and forth messages and a negotiated fee later...

Dorothy didn't like the boxy shape of the top and the sleeves were a little too poofy for her liking. The length was also a little long, but she really loved the elastic waist.

I quickly drew out a few sketches of ideas based on her likes and dislikes and came up with this:

Some more back and forth emails later, the price was set, the design was set, and we were both excited for the results!

After receiving the dress in the mail, I worked on it for a few weeks until I felt it was ready to go.

The During

The top part was basically reconstructed with the sleeves and collar removed and sides taken in. Unfortunately, I was unable to create a new waistband like I had originally planned due to the elastic, but the shortened skirt length helped modernize the shape a lot.

My first custom request, a success! Thanks to Dorothy for the photos and for the request! If anyone else is interested in a custom re-design of a vintage piece, please email me. I definitely want to try doing more custom pieces when time allows. I can do simple hem shortenings to full out re-designs depending on the original piece. Sadly, I made the mistake of taking the photos indoors (it was too late at night to shoot outside) and the coloring looks so yellowed. Never again! Or at least next time I will try better lighting. Times like this I wish I had a better camera and well, a complete photo studio complete with white backdrop. Alas, I'll happily settle for a DSLR camera once I save up!

The football quarterback look isn't really something I wanted to strive towards. And though very avant-garde, Margiela isn't quite wearable. So, some major cutting of the sleeves and careful hand sewing later led to a softer, more feminine asymmetrical tiered dress. The focus went from the shoulders to the cool bottom. I wish I took a closeup of the dots on this dress, almost a very cute leopard print!

DIY Hemming v.1

By popular request, a DIY is finally here. This how-to works best on circle dresses or skirts... basically a skirt that has one seam and when fanned out, looks like a circle. Just a note of warning, my techniques aren't exactly professional or even completely logical at times, but they work for me and hopefully will for you too!

How to hem a long circle dress/skirt:

What you will need:

Sewing shears
Ruler
Straight pins
Marking chalk
Flat surface (I use an old drawing board)

step 1: Fold the skirt up to how short you want it. Pin up the excess and check the length in a mirror.

step 2: Remove the dress and mark your cutting line by measuring 1/2" down from where you pinned it. For example, I wanted 9" off the bottom, so I marked it at 8.5" to leave room to sew the new hem. If you want a wider hem, measure further away from the pin.

step 3: Measure all around the skirt and mark the cutting line.

step 4: The scary part! Cut along your marked cutting line and follow the original hem shape as much as possible.

step 5: Spread out the skirt and make sure it lines up front and back. Trim as needed to get it even.

step 6: Fold over the fabric and pin it. If your fabric irons well (mine didn't at all), iron the edge to create a sharp crease. This would also be a good time to try on the dress again to make sure the length is to your liking (be careful of the pins)

step 7: Sew along your new hem completely around the skirt. I wanted a thin space between the stitches and the edge, so I sewed 1/8" away from the needle. If you want a wider hem, sew further away from the edge.

step 8: After you've sewed all around your new hem, trim the excess thread.

In addition to the hemming, I also changed up the sleeves a bit and made them shorter. Please excuse my mosquito bitten legs in the 'after' photos. My normal downtown Saturday night ended up being an adventure through a tiny town and into a camp site in the middle of the woods (long story), and of course inappropriately dressed for the occasion.

The 'before' of this adorable vintage dress looked a little too sleepwear-ish. This was reiterated to me when my mom asked if she could wear it... to sleep in. Finally! A new before after post and my first listing! Though nothing extravagant at all, the only alteration on this dress was a big chop off the bottom and a hemming. Amazing how different shortening a dress can change the whole look of an item.

I'm slowly (very slowly) learning my ways around Etsy and organizing all the vintage pieces I need to alter and sell. Every day I'm learning something new in the online vintage business and hope that I can get into the swing of things soon! Setting up the store is taking much more time than I expected. I want everything to be perfect and organized and of course that takes time, which I seem to lack nowadays thanks to my new full time real world career.

Sorry for the unannounced hiatus! After driving back 14 hours from San Antonio last Thursday, the July 4th weekend was filled with celebrations. I just started my first real world job yesterday and am adjusting to a new schedule, including having to wake up at *eek* 6am (almost my previous bed time). I'm slowly planning out some new before afters with all the finds from Texas, setting up an online store, and of course sewing sewing sewing. Hope you all stay tuned! :)

My outfit from this past weekend's night festivities. Since I've spent the majority of the days touring around San Antonio with my brother and his gf, I had pretty much zero time to get ready for the night fun. So my quick change included throwing on this vest I picked up at a random cheap-o juniors store at the huge San Marcos outlet mall and this skirt from F21, which I keep seeing in a similar multi-color option. Now if only I could figure out how to va-va-voom my hair in a quick minute. The humidity here is definitely a killer.

To my delight, my brother and his gf have the most adorable and loving dog possibly on this planet. I love the idea of having my own dog, but am pretty sure I would suck at taking care of one every day. So the next best thing is semi-adopting their's (Bom Bai) as mine for the week. He's excited for a new friend and I'm enjoying the fun duties that come along with pet ownership. The whole feeding, bathing, and cleaning-up-after tasks are, however, left for his real owners. Such a great deal.

The pop of color in Alexander Wang's Resort collection was that orange dress. The light fabric of this vintage dress made it perfect to recreate the tiered and flowy layers sans what I think is a cape(?)...I couldn't quite find another photo that showed the back. I didn't fully capture the A.Wangness of the inspiration since I used a printed dress and the orange color of the original is really what defines it, but overall I'm pretty happy with how the shape of my re-creation turned out. I may have to try this one again with a solid color.

Tomorrow I'm going to Orlando for 5 days to visit my oldest brother. Things on the itinerary: thrift shopping (I hear FL has some of the best stores), Disney World (who doesn't like being a kid again?), and lots of beach time! Of course blogging will continue as well. I can't wait to have better location spots for photos... living in the Midwest leaves very little to play with.

The doodley pattern on this dress was too bright and beautiful for me to pass up. It reminded me of a box of Crayola markers...which I honestly still use to draw with since art markers are $$$ and I am on a strict budget until I start my job in July.

For the remade dress, I cut off the bottom and made a bubble hem with the excess fabric and then took in the sides of the top to make it a little more fitted. I debated for a good 15 minutes about whether I should keep the neckline as it was or cut it low like the inspiration. So I kind of went half way with it et voila! Unfortunately, I couldn't capture the great thick waistline, but I may try again another day.

When I saw this dress at F21, I immediately thought of the tiny floral pattern pieces throughout Luella's S/S '08 collection. If only I had some fierce lace up boots to go with it...hmmm....

As you can probably tell from my previous outfits, I am obsessed with light denim this summer. This dress was completely maternal-esque, but what caught my eye was the back buttons and strap (see below).

At first, my idea was to turn the dress into a romper, but attempts to create a mock crotch were unsuccessful and really awkward looking. So instead, I opted for a tunic by cutting off a lot of the length. The main alterations are in the straps... I made them thinner and added some stitching detail on the front.

Seriously, how cool is the racerback and tiny pocket? The original buttons are different from the ones I added on the front... butttt I kind of like it!

Discoveries

This Chanel top is one of my ultimate favorite finds from the now defunct Housing Works By the Pound store that was in Midtown. For $3 per pound, I was more than willing to dig through the piles of donated clothes, shoes, purses, and um...random partially filled soda bottle (gross) that were in huge garbage-like bins.

The denim shorts were also a thrift store find and I think they're from H&M. They were actually large flare pants, but I cut them off, finished the edges, and cuffed them into high-wasted shorts.

The boots are a discovery from cleaning out the shoe closet when I moved back home. My mom says they were given to her many many years ago, but she never wore them = "new" vintage for me. I love the fringe on the back and the beading detail. Though they're a little warm for summer, they will hopefully be in full affect for my fall wardrobe.

Now that I'm back home in the Midwest, I finally have the time and space to work on all the thrifted goodies I picked up when I was living in NYC. I like the crescent-shaped pockets on this denim skirt, but the length was a little too cowgirl for me. An easy hemming fixed that.
